Wave Energy

People have imagined capturing the awesome power of ocean waves for centuries. Now, just offshore of Reedsport, OR the imagined power source is about to become a reality. Wave power developers now have the nation's only federal permit to develop a commercial wave power park off the Oregon coast. The project will include 10 buoys anchored 2 1/2 miles off the coast and covering about 30 acres. The buoys will be connected to the onshore grid by an undersea cable. They will produce 1.5 megawatts — enough to power about 1,000 homes. The first PowerBuoy, which received funding from the U.S. Energy Department, is expected to be installed this year.
